MATCH STORY
The final in the fledgling North American Nations League against rivals Mexico gave Gregg Berhalter’s up-and-coming squad their first true test. Even though vastly more experience at the international level, it was still disappointing when El Trí jumped out to a first-minute lead. But the young Americans struck back in the 27th minute courtesy of Giovanni Reyna. Mexico restored their lead in the second half through substitute Diego Lainez, but again the Americans answered three minutes later through Weston McKennie. Extra time would be needed to determine the competition’s inaugural champion, and it would be full of drama. First, the U.S. were awarded a penalty, which Christian Pulisic converted to raucous applause — and missiles from the stands. Mexico would also see a penalty awarded minutes from time, but it was turned away by substitute goalkeeper Ethan Horvath to give the U.S. the title.
DESIGN STORY
The match side of the wristband depicts the touchline where the U.S. celebrated their third goal, littered with the trash Mexican supporters rained down upon them. The reverse features an energetic pinstripe reminiscent of the design found on the sides of the current U.S. white kits.
